Book: The Pentagon's New Map

The Pentagon’s New Map, by Thomas Barnett
7/1/04
And so the book goes on to describe a future worth creating. A half full approach and a description of false myths.

Ultimately the book speaks to something that is worth being a part of.

Notes:
Reproducing Ideas, A good strategic concept is reproducible; therefore, as it’s shared, it is replicated.

No top guy put it together; they are all too busy running the show to step back and think. Result, lots of detailed “puzzle pieces” but no one really putting the puzzle together.

USAID – US Agency for International Development, Optimistic Organization.

Finding Rules: Once you have rules, you typically find rule enforcers built in.

Senator Showmanship: Senators say world is chaotic and unpredictable plans still show up on C-SPAN after a security disaster to decry an intelligence failure.

In 1946 a think take had the ludicrous Idea of:
Germany and Japan integrating economically, they would pose no threat to peace and Russia would topple its self.

GWOT, not a bush administration creation, it would appear under any president

Bring together financial and security people.

“Disconnected”
Kept isolated, deprived, repressed, and uneducated.
Men are ignorant bored males
Masses, lack of choice and access to ideas, capital, travel, entertainment, etc.
Elite, control, holder of wealth and raw materials.

American is ideological wellspring of globalization, we started it.

US Selling
Must compromise along the way to create and implant new rule sets. If we can sell it it will be not be dismissed.

“Lesser Includeds”
Small nations to play with, Somalia, etc.

Leadership, the ability to lead people to a decision they didn’t want to make

The Navy, The US Navy is the only navy with global reach.

National Interests. What are they, never really life in politics to ask.

Fear of joining the core:
Modern western system of rules results in traditional societies being further damaged and ultimately perverted

Type of integration security environments:
System, Big state on state
Inter state, (Iraq into Kuwait)
Intra State (Serbia)

The threat of the 21st century, educated elites leading globalization disenfranchised, use of dirty trucks, growing more perverse.

Terrorist networks like McDonalds, kill the franchises by destroying Hamburger University, I think not.

Budgeting decision:
9/11 allowed the pentagon to put off decision by giving them money without forcing innovation.

Vertical vs. Horizontal thinking. Vertical follows a trend, Horizontal follows many trends.
