Book: The Pentagon's New Map
The Pentagon’s New Map, by Thomas Barnett
7/1/04
And so the book goes on to describe a future worth creating. A half full approach and a description of false myths.
Ultimately the book speaks to something that is worth being a part of.
Notes:
Reproducing Ideas, A good strategic concept is reproducible; therefore, as it’s shared, it is replicated.
No top guy put it together; they are all too busy running the show to step back and think. Result, lots of detailed “puzzle pieces” but no one really putting the puzzle together.
USAID – US Agency for International Development, Optimistic Organization.
Finding Rules: Once you have rules, you typically find rule enforcers built in.
Senator Showmanship: Senators say world is chaotic and unpredictable plans still show up on C-SPAN after a security disaster to decry an intelligence failure.
In 1946 a think take had the ludicrous Idea of:
Germany and Japan integrating economically, they would pose no threat to peace and Russia would topple its self.
GWOT, not a bush administration creation, it would appear under any president
Bring together financial and security people.
“Disconnected”
Kept isolated, deprived, repressed, and uneducated.
Men are ignorant bored males
Masses, lack of choice and access to ideas, capital, travel, entertainment, etc.
Elite, control, holder of wealth and raw materials.
American is ideological wellspring of globalization, we started it.
US Selling
Must compromise along the way to create and implant new rule sets. If we can sell it it will be not be dismissed.
“Lesser Includeds”
Small nations to play with, Somalia, etc.
Leadership, the ability to lead people to a decision they didn’t want to make
The Navy, The US Navy is the only navy with global reach.
National Interests. What are they, never really life in politics to ask.
Fear of joining the core:
Modern western system of rules results in traditional societies being further damaged and ultimately perverted
Type of integration security environments:
System, Big state on state
Inter state, (Iraq into Kuwait)
Intra State (Serbia)
The threat of the 21st century, educated elites leading globalization disenfranchised, use of dirty trucks, growing more perverse.
Terrorist networks like McDonalds, kill the franchises by destroying Hamburger University, I think not.
Budgeting decision:
9/11 allowed the pentagon to put off decision by giving them money without forcing innovation.
Vertical vs. Horizontal thinking. Vertical follows a trend, Horizontal follows many trends.

Book: Thunder Run
Thunder Run, David Zucchino
6/17/04
Excellent book, much like Blackhawk Down. 2 days told over 300+ pages. Does a great job of telling the individual stories that make the saga. Perhaps the “fire” is slightly over estimated as it sounds like the unit is constantly being hammered by the enemy, but all in all, a great take of how Baghdad was won.
Notes:
About the Author:
Was at the Philadelphia Inquirer with Mark Bouden (Blackhawk Down) and edited that book and Killing Pablo. He was with 2/3 ID assaulted Baghdad.
Prior to Baghdad, the 3d ID had completed the fasted sustained combat ground march in history. 704km in 2 weeks (300km in 24 hours). On April 4th, 2003, they were at Tampa and Irish to strange an assault North.
Both Iraqis and American s expected an Armor/Mechanized siege with airborne clearing the city.
On the Green Zone:
Key government and military command nodes
Located in central part of the city, had Saddam’s Palace
Walled city within a city
3km by 1 ½ km wide
Not seen by everyday Iraqis
Republican Palace
Smaller Places
Homes of Officers of the Bath Party and the Republican guard elite
Manicured lawns
Parade Field
Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
Sword Arches “Saddam’s Hands”
Helmets of Iranians from the Iran/Iraq war
Neo-Stalinist Architecture.
The Assault:
1-64 takes the tomb and parade ground, bath party HQ, Sujud Palace, which becomes the BDE TAC.
4-64 crashed into republican palace, A/4-64 “Assassin” crash though the large gate (Later named for the company) and takes the palace compound.
The resistance had planed and organized to hold the bridges
Sure enough, weak point of the U.S. was the seam between battalions
All around excellent defense. The soldiers for the 3d ID truly close with the enemy. Interesting how the combat teams, AR/IN work.

Book: Villa Incognito
Villa Incognito, Tim Robbins
2/4/04
A story of 3 folks who exscape from military service to run drugs. They found their “Villa Incognito.” They also tell of the Tuniks. The book isn’t about much, just about doing what you want to do and being who you want to be based on who you are.
Another great from Robbins. Bought the book in Santa Cruz with Liz on the way to WA.

Book: Gates of Fire
Gates of Fire, Steven Pressfield
1/11/04
Gates of Fire tells the story of the point of view of a Squire for a platoon commander at the Greek Battle of Thermopylae against the Persians. The book starts by relaying the Squire’s life and how he came to be a Spartan squire. The rigors of training, the abuse that prepares men for the abuse of battle.
The book then recounts the battle where the Greeks held off the assault of hundreds of thousands of Persians with only 4000 soldiers. The book teaches leadership and attempts to explain why worriers do it. It also reminds us that the opposite of fear, is love.
Notes:
Dienekes, Platoon Commander, all of his life
Leonidas, King of Sparta
Polynikes, Commander, scout, etc.
Olympus, Commander
The battle of Thermopylae, Spartans of Lakedaemon
Dienekes showing leadership after a battle, the role of an officer:
“To prevent those under his command, at all stages of battle- before, during, and after- from becoming “possessed.” To free their valor when flagged and rein in their furry when it is threatened to take them out of hand.”
Dienekos teaches:
As all born, hw was primarily a student, he studied fear, and its opposite..
Leonides on leading men before departing:
Men will look to you, act as you do, don’t keep to your self, circulate, and let the men see you unafraid. When there is work, start first, finish last. Sleep among your men, keep men busy, talk turns to fear, action produces appetite for action.
Dinkens teaches that Spartans teaches fear conquers fear. (of exclusion from the pack, dishonor), but that rage, action out of fear.
When Domineche (Childhood “sister” leaves Xeo):
“Let neither of us pity the other,” my cousin spoke in parting; we are all where we must be and will do what we must.
Dinkens “fear is love”
Dinkens to men as the prep for final combat:
“Here is what you do, friends, forget country, forget wife and children and freedom. Forget every concept, however noble, that you imagine you fight for here today. Act for this alone, for the man who stands at your shoulder. He is everything and everything is contained within him. That’s all I know and that all I can tell you.”
Xeo explains what a kind is: One who endures with his men then respects the envy.
Dinkens reveals strength of women. When king tell why her husband and son were chosen to fight. Because she could handle it and set the example- “Those were the last tears of mine, my lord, that the sun will ever see”
