A short book about a couple, who’s daughter left for the Peace Corps, and decides to take a year off from Christmas. The daughter comes home as the last minuet and the neighborhood comes together for a Christmas party.
Moral: Always give folks another chance.

Book: The Painted House
The Painted House, John Grisham

A story about growing up on a farm. A cotton farm in Arkansas. The boy, Luke, 7, witnesses several things such as a murder and is forced to keep secrets.
The curiosity of a child is communicated as are the complex corners of life on a farm. This book makes one realize and seek ones dreams. I think farming is fascinating; it is good old American work. I would like to do it someday.

Book: The Wealthy Barber
The Wealthy Barber, by David Chilton

Ideas:
Save 10% of net income, this is for wealth, a boat, nice retirement house, etc.
Max Retirement, 401(k)s, IRA, etc
Have a correct will
Correct amount of life insurance
Renting vs. Buying
Budget backwards
Take things off the top and spend the rest, pay your self first
AKA 10%, health insurance, retirement, then bills
This forces a discretionary spending cut
Best thing to do with excess cash, i.e. inheritance, is to PALY FF non-deductible debt
Then crank the 10% fund to 15%
Then spend it on yourself
Fill out tax forms yourself (1040-Long), and then go see a pro
Small Emergency Fund 2-3k
Disability Insurance, ask lots of questions, etc.
Make a Plan a follow it

Book On The Road
On The Road, Jack Kerouac

Dean:
On Nietzsche:
“Everything is fine, god exists, we know time.”
On America:
“I know the people, I know what they do. We give and take and go in the incredibly complicated sweetness zigzagging every side”
After a confusing story:
“This is night, what it does to you. I have nothing to offer anybody except my own confusion”
Well written, no?
Dean appreciates people, he know everyone is fascinating somehow. One just has to find it and he was willing to dig.
“All alone in the night I had my own thoughts and held the car to the white line in the holy road” What was I doing, where was I going? I’d soon find out.
Old Bull, a guy who wants to taste it all, Paris, London, Istanbul, Chi-town, Do what the locals do, for the experience
Apparently has multiple personalities. One a middle one, an old Negro man says “Some’s bastards, some’s aint and that’s the score” (True enough)
On those you leave behind:
“They stand, uncertainly underneath immense skies and everything about them is drowned, where go, what do, sleep.”
When Sal caught up w/ Dean in Frisco:
“Apparently Dean had been quiet for a few months; now the angle had arrive and he was going mad again”
Perhaps the best quote of the book, while Dean and Sal go east:
“The point being that we know what IT is and we know TIME and we know that everything is really FINE. Now you just dig them, up in front, they have worries, they’re counting the miles, they’re counting the miles, they’re thinking about where to sleep tonight, how much money for gas, the weather, how they’ll get there- and all the time, they’ll get there anyway, you see.”
“Around this lonely night stretched hundreds of miles of plains. The kind of utter darkness that falls on a prairie that is inconceivable to an Easterner. There were no starts, no moon; no light whatsoever except the light of a kitchen what lay beyond the shadows of the yard was an endless view of the world that you wouldn’t be able to see till dawn.”
On going to Mexico City:
“Besides, he knew the road would get more interesting, especially ahead, always ahead”

Main character, Ray Attlee finds his father dead, after being summoned home. He finds will and $3 million in cash. Spends the book hiding it from people who know about it. Turns out his brother hoped ray would do the right thing, but when he doesn’t brother Forrest steals it back.

Question everything “Know what matters, who cares what a birds name is, what is it doing? Question it.”
Don’t care what others thing.

Visualization, practice it. (Color variables)
Counting by visualizing or by talking, can’t cross them with reading and speaking
Everyone does things differently, like counting.
Good summary at the end, a speech. First ½ is a set of stories; the 2nd half is an explanation of the NASA Challenger explosion.
The challenger section is a good lesson in how to go about investigating something.
Look at management and work to learn to judge what people say and how to get them to tell you what you want to hear.
Get outside the box.
Insist that your passions and instincts are represented.
